The 2010 Balfour Leadership Training Workshop (LTW), held this year from July 29-31 at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, N.C., has officially become the largest in the program's 63-year history. A total of 1,865 people have registered to attend the three-day conference, including 1,430 Sigma Chi undergraduates. Last year, about 1,600 people attended the event.
The workshop annually trains undergraduates, who will be placed into divisions based on their chapter leadership positions, on how to better perform their respective roles. Last month, the Fraternity's Balfour Leadership Operating Board had expected the event to attract about 1,700 registrants. Ken Bailey, EAST TENNESSEE 1992, who is the lead facilitator for the chapter presidents' division at this year's Balfour LTW, credits the quality of previous workshops with the high turnout.
“The tools that Workshop gives officers have a great benefit for when the brothers return home [and implement them within their chapter roles],” Bailey says. “Not only is Balfour [LTW] a good time, it's also an incredible learning experience and a great opportunity to gather with 1,800 brothers.”

The record-breaking number would include undergraduates as well as alumni volunteers and facilitators. Balfour LTW is Sigma Chi’s annual undergraduate leadership workshop for undergraduate chapter officers.
“Based on early registration, we seem to be on course toward registering more people than last year,” says Order of Constantine Sig J. Chris Brown, FURMAN 1989. “Overall, we’re very optimistic that the groundwork has been laid for a successful workshop.” Brown has been the chairman of the Balfour Leadership Operating Board, which offers oversight for Balfour LTW, since September 2009.
There were about 1,300 participants at the 2005 Balfour LTW. At the inaugural Leadership Training Workshop in 1947 at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, there were 215 undergraduate attendees. In recognition of the Lloyd G. Balfour Foundation’s support of the program, in 1997, it adopted the name of L. G. Balfour, INDIANA 1907.

Fargo, N.D., March 24
The North Dakota State Univeristy Presidential Search Committee has further reduced the number of candidates in its work to help select NDSU's next president. At its March 24 meeting, the committee chose six candidates for off-campus interviews and announced it would check references of five additional candidates.
NDSU's two internal candidates - President Richard A. Hanson and D.C. Coston, vice president for Agriculture and University Extension - were among a group of five candidates removed from further consideration.
Committee chair Steve Swiontek described the meeting as a challenge.
"It was a very difficult process. It was important that the committee looked at all the individuals who were remaining and determined what is the best fit and the appropriate candidates to move the university forward," Swiontek said. "We had very good list of candidates, but we had to narrow it down."
Six candidates will be scheduled for interviews on Saturday, April 10, and Sunday, April 11, at the Ramada Plaza Suites and Conference Center in Fargo. They are:
• Thomas Keon, dean of business administration at the University of Central Florida;
• Dean Bresciani, former vice president for student affairs at Texas A&M University;
• Priscilla Nelson, professor of civil and environmental engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology;
• John Gardner, vice president for economic development and global engagement at Washington State University;
• Benjamin Ogles, dean of arts and sciences at Ohio University;
• and William Ruud, president at Shippensburg University.
In addition, the committee will check references for five recently received applications. Those candidates are:
• Vishwanath Prasad, vice president for research and economic development at the University of North Texas;
• Gary Miller, provost and vice president for academic affairs and research at Wichita State University;
• Michael O'Brien, dean of arts and sciences at the University of Missouri;
• Richard Davenport, president of Minnesota State University, Mankato;
• and Colin Scanes, vice chancellor of research and economic development and dean of the graduate school at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.
The committee is scheduled to meet March 30 to select which of the additional candidates would be asked to come to Fargo for the off-campus interviews. For the latest information, visit www.ndsu.edu/news/transition/.
The committee has been charged with providing the State Board of Higher Education at least three unranked candidates for the board's consideration.
